This blog

is a display of some of my oil paintings and drawings over the last two and a half years.
To view things in the order of their completion start at the bottom and work up. The paintings on the first page were all done in 2011 and all feature skulls. A skull offers the artist a portrait subject, a still life subject and even elements of a landscape--endless fascination.

Still Life in a Niche, 2010
30" x 24"

The inspiration for this came from a still life by Abraham Mignon.  In it the items were given coherence by being tucked into a dark niche.  A snail was inching along the bottom.  The 17th century Dutch still life painters included bugs and snails and their effects in their work.  I made a light box niche and used flora and fauna from the garden.
